Management Aptitude Test (MAT)

MAT Test : Conducted by AIMA

  • Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a standardised test being administered since 1988 to facilitate Business Schools (B-Schools) to screen candidates for admission to MBA and allied programmes. Govt. of India, Ministry of HRD approved MAT as a national level test in 2003. Any B-School – national or international – can consider MAT Score as an admission input based on the Score Cards issued to the candidates. The largest test of its kind in the nation, MAT will continue to be your passport to over 600 B-Schools across India.
  • MAT is usually conducted 4 times in a year in February, May, September and December. The minimum qualification for appearing in MAT is graduation in any discipline from any recognized University or equivalent recognized degree. A final year student in any undergraduate
Eligibility Graduates in any discipline. Final year students of Graduate Courses can also apply.

Candidate can take MAT as
(i) Paper Based Test (PBT) or
(ii) Computer Based Test (CBT) or
(iii) Both PBT & CBT
Note:·  Candidates opting for both PBT and CBT will have the benefit of selecting additional 2 Management Institutions for sending their scores in addition to existing option of selecting 5 Management Institutions i.e. they can select 7 Management Institutions in total.

List of Participating Management Institutes Select the institutes where you have applied or are applying for admission. Important Notice: Candidates are advised to check the approval/recognition status of various programs directly from the concerned Authorities/ Institutes/ Universities.

AIMA has come across a couple of cases where the aspiring candidates’ MAT score is not accepted by some participating institutes/universities for admission to MBA full time course despite their confirmation to AIMA MAT at the time of participation by incorporating their notifications in MAT e bulletin. Candidates are advised to recheck with the concerned institutes/universities before applying for MAT.

Syllabus and Exam Pattern

                MAT exam is held for almost two-and-a-half hours. The test covers two hundred (200) questions in 150 minutes. The aspirant is tested in the following five areas: Indian and Global Environment, Language Comprehension, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, Mathematical Skills, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning. There are 40 questions in each section. Each question carries one mark, whereas, one/fourth mark is deducted for every wrong answer.

  • Here are a few tips for MAT exam preparation: 
  • Practice reading ‘Reading Comprehension’ passages for at least two to three months, about four to five per day.
  • Go through all the rules of grammar and make an effort to understand the contextual usage of words and phrases in English.
  • For Quant, practice about 20-25 questions every day. Lay particular emphasis on Arithmetic and Algebra-based questions – these are quite common in MAT exam

Aspirants need a thorough grip on logical and analytic reasoning, verbal ability, data interpretation, quant, mathematics and social awareness.
